Seven easy-to-implement guidelines to design a more accessible web.

Nice read by Pablo Stanley on Digital Accessibility.
Digital accessibility refers to the practice of building digital content and applications that can be used by a wide range of people, including individuals who have visual, motor, auditory, speech, or cognitive disabilities.

Rebuilding the card component with CSS Grid

I have rebuilt the card component using CSS Grid. CSS Grid is the ultimate tool for your layout. Though Flex Box is awesome, it does have it’s limitations and only allows you to edit on one axis at a time. Where CSS Grid gives you greater control over your layout and allows you to work on two axis (columns and rows) simultaneously, on a single DIV. CSS Grid allows us to flatten the markup and design our pages using a grid system. Which opens up new layout possibilities!
See the prototype example with the updated CSS Grid here. Resize the web browser to see the flex in action!

Card component prototype using “flex-basis”

Completed an exercise using “flex-basis” and “flex-direction” to create a card component. Using flex basis helps control the size of the image based on the flex direction which is really helpful with the layout when creating a component for mobile and larger screen sizes.
See the prototype example here. Resize the web browser to see the flex in action!

Remove the “Protected:” prefix for password protected posts

How to remove the “Protected:” prefix for password protected posts in WordPress.
The idea here was to remove the “Protected:” prefix that is displayed before the Post title in the header title, leaving only the Post title displayed.
To achieve this I needed to modify the PHP in the functions.php theme file, adding a filter, function, and return.
In order to edit you’ll need to login to the WordPress dashboard, and then Appearance > Editor > functions.php
Add the following code listed below at the end of the file.

Copy of the code below:

/**
* edit – removes the ‘Protected:’ part from password protected posts titles
*/
add_filter( ‘protected_title_format’, ‘remove_protected_text’
function remove_protected_text() {
return __(‘%s’);
}
